DROPPING BY

A red-shouldered hawk sits Tuesday atop its prey _ a dead squirrel _ at John Chesnut Sr. Park in East Lake. The bird had dropped the squirrel while perched in a slash pine at the park. It then swooped down to pick up the squirrel and fly off with it. Red-shouldered hawks often make meals of small mammals but will also dine on reptiles, insects and even other birds.
