Investigation shows

woman had used drugs

ZEPHYRHILLS _ State investigators have concluded that a 41-year-old woman who died in April after nearly drowning in Lake Iola was under the influence of drugs while operating her personal watercraft, according to a report by the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's office found evidence that Teresa Carrico of Zephyrhills had recently used cocaine and benzodiazepines at the time of her death. Benzodiazepines include Xanax and Valium and are commonly used for their depressant qualities to treat anxiety.

Witnesses told authorities that Carrico had been riding around the north Pasco lake earlier. Eventually, she was found floating in the lake.

She was taken to Pasco Regional Medical Center and died the next day.

She was not wearing a life jacket, authorities said.
