Sheriff's Office to hold gun buyback program this weekend

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office will hold a gun buyback on Saturday.

Residents can exchange their guns at three Pasco County Sheriff's Office locations: the Central Detention Center on Central Boulevard in Land O'Lakes; the East Operations center on Howard Avenue in Dade City; and the administration building on Citizen Drive in New Port Richey.

In exchange for the guns, officials will hand out $50 gift certificates from local stores. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office used $12,675 in drug forfeiture money to buy the gift certificates from local merchants.

The Pasco buyback is part of a regional effort called the 2000 Cease Fire Tampa Gun Buy Back. Law enforcement from Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties will join in the event.

Last year, 1,926 guns were turned in by Tampa Bay area residents; 381 were from Pasco County. Anyone with questions about the gun buyback can call (888) 217-1142.
