After the flurry of movies that opened last Friday and Christmas Day, this weekend offers no new openings, but instead a much-needed chance to catch up with recent releases.
All the Pretty Horses, based on Cormac McCarthy's gritty novel of the West, stars Penelope Cruz and Matt Damon (above) as the star-crossed lovers. Another Christmas Day release, Quills, is a lively satire that stars Geoffrey Rush as the Marquis de Sade, portrayed in his final days as a crusader for artistic freedom (showing only at Tampa Theatre and Beach Theater). In Finding Forrester, Sean Connery plays a reclusive author coaxed out of isolation by a gifted young student.
Films released last Friday include Tom Hanks' latest hit, Cast Away, which strands him on a deserted island; Nicolas Cage as the self-centered rich guy who turns into a Family Man; Sandra Bullock as a tomboy FBI agent turned undercover pageant contestant in Miss Congeniality; and Juliette Binoche as a woman whose Chocolat confections set a French village all aflutter.
