Not all is in good fun
The Walsh Cup started 10 years ago to settle a Walsh family argument about who was the best soccer player in the house. A decade later, the six Walsh brothers have added MLS players, corporate sponsorship and a few hundred spectators to their backyard event in Chatham, N.J. The Walsh Cup attracts players of all ages and abilities from all over for a five-a-side tournament the Saturday before Christmas. One participant this year was MetroStars goalkeeper Mike Amman, nicknamed "Ribs" because of the breaks inflicted by Mutiny forward Mamadou Diallo in an MLS game this year. "Haunted" is a good word to describe Amman: "I would love to play against Diallo. Because in the Walsh Cup, there are no referees."
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Vikings receiver Randy Moss amassed 4,000 receiving yards in 47 games, faster than any player in NFL history. Whose record did he break?
"I'm not necessarily doing it because I want to do it, but because I think it's the right thing to do. I don't think this is going to set us back. Where are we going to go back to?"
_ BILL COWHER
Steelers coach on firing offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. Translation: I'd rather get rid of Kordell Stewart, but Gilbride's cheaper to dump.
