Shielded from Thursday's rain, a lunchtime pedestrian crosses the intersection of Fifth Street and Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. Rain and chilly weather assaulted the area Thursday. The weekend, however, should be cloudy but not rainy, with daytime temperatures in the 50s and nighttime temperatures dropping into the 30s, experts say. The dampness, although helpful in curbing fireworks-sparked fires, does not really alleviate the area's drought conditions, authorities say. The drought index is at 524 in Pinellas County and 624 in the driest local county, Hernando. The index ranges from 0 (soaked conditions) to 800 (desert aridity).
