Woman accused of stealing from car

Police think they have found one of the thieves who repeatedly stole purses and checkbooks from the unlocked cars of parents dropping off children at preschools and day care centers in St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach.

Jennifer McGirt, 20, of 4759 23rd Ave. N, St. Petersburg, is charged in only one case, but detectives are working to charge her in other thefts.

She and her husband, Andre McGirt, 38, were arrested last week in Stuart and charged with a vehicle burglary outside a day-care center there. In their car was a camera stolen in a St. Petersburg burglary.

Police matched Jennifer McGirt's fingerprints with a fingerprint on a stolen check from one of the St. Petersburg auto burglaries.

She was arrested Wednesday at her St. Petersburg home and was charged with burglary to a vehicle and passing a forged check. Her husband is not charged in any local cases.

Police are investigating at least 15 such thefts _ eight in St. Petersburg, four in St. Pete Beach and three in areas patroled by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
