FLORIDA-MIAMI: A RIVALRY REVISITED

Florida and Miami play for the first time in 13 seasons Tuesday in New Orleans. To refresh everyone's memories of this bitter rivalry, the Times will review one classic game in the series each day leading up to the Sugar Bowl.

Sept. 4, 1982, Florida Field, Gainesville

Florida trailed 14-10 with less than two minutes left when fullback James Jones made what is known among Gators fans as "The Catch." Quarterback Wayne Peace rolled out and lofted a high pass to the front corner of the end zone that appeared to be beyond Jones' reach. Backing into the end zone, Jones reached up with his right hand and nabbed the ball while falling backward into the end zone. "It was a Willie Mays deluxe," UF coach Charley Pell said.

Sports Illustrated documented the game, putting Peace on its cover with the title "Peace Corps." Jones' catch remains one of the most memorable at Florida Field.
