2 more spring breakers hurt in falls

A Clermont man suffered severe head injuries in a five-story fall from a hotel balcony, and another young man was hospitalized in the Panhandle after falling 8 feet and hitting his head.

Steve Larsen, 20, was listed in critical condition in Daytona Beach at Halifax Medical Center Wednesday afternoon. Although not a student, Larsen was staying at the hotel for spring break, Daytona Beach police Sgt. Al Tolley said.

Larsen had been drinking and partying with friends most of the night at the Fountain Beach Resort, Tolley said. About 9 a.m., he was invited to a room below his and tried to lower himself from his balcony, Tolley said. He slipped and fell 50 feet onto the concrete.

Larsen was the second person in three days to suffer serious injuries in a fall from a hotel balcony. Early Sunday, a 19-year-old Rutgers University student fell three stories from a Fort Lauderdale motel balcony while trying to jump into a swimming pool. He died the next day.

In Panama City Beach, authorities said a young man who spent the night atop a small building by the pool at the Fountainbleau Hotel after an evening of drinking fell Wednesday morning while trying to climb down.

Officials at Bay Medical Center confirmed that the fall victim was being treated, but did not make public his condition or name. There was no immediate response from Panama City Beach police seeking details of the incident.
