Two 12-year-old girls were accused of trying to drown a classmate in a lake after she refused to lend them her swim mask and flippers, police said.
The unidentified girls face attempted murder and robbery charges, St. Lucie County Sheriff Office's spokesman Mark Weinberg said.
Witnesses said Rebecca Nicole Maines, 12, was swimming in a lake near her home Monday afternoon when the two girls asked to use her mask and flippers. When Rebecca refused, they jumped in the water, grabbed her gear and began beating her.
Rebecca told police the girls grabbed her by the neck and shoved her head underwater. A witness, Hosea Rivers, 16, jumped in, separated the girls and pulled Rebecca out of the water.
Rivers told authorities he had to rescue Rebecca again when the girls tried to drown her a short time later. He said the girls harassed Rebecca as she walked home from the lake.
A police report said Rebecca suffered bruises all over her body and several cuts.
