Spartans combine to no-hit Warriors

Lakewood coach Rick Brantley had trouble deciding who was going to be his starting pitcher on the road against Osceola on Friday _ freshman Emily Milroy or senior ace Lauren Groves.

Brantley chose Milroy, and the decision turned out to be a good one as Milroy threw six no-hit innings to lead the Spartans (7-6) to a 4-0 victory. Groves closed the seventh inning to complete the no-hitter.

Milroy struck out 10 and Groves finished with two strikeouts.

Malia Walker and Amber Horan scored to put the Spartans up 2-0 in the second inning with the help of Osceola errors.

The Spartans added two more runs in the third as Milroy scored on Walker's sacrifice fly, and Jessica Hale scored on Horan's triple.

Michelle Tatlock pitched all seven innings for Osceola and recorded seven strikeouts in the loss. She gave up three hits, but the six errors the Warriors commited ruined their chances for victory. Errors led to all four Lakewood runs.

"Our pitching has been good," Brantley said. "All we have to do is hit the ball a little better and we can compete, which is all we want to do."
