The students will compete in the state Odyssey of the Mind competition in Orlando.

Two Tampa Palms Elementary School teams are headed to the state Odyssey of the Mind competition, and several other north Tampa schools placed at last weekend's regional event held at the University of South Florida.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition for elementary, middle and high school students. Teams of five to seven people develop a solution to a problem and present the solution in a competition against other teams. A New Jersey professor created the creative problem-solving competition 30 years ago to test students' teamwork and thinking abilities.

At the March 10 regional competition, with teams from Hillsborough and Polk counties, Tampa Palms Elementary had three teams place in the top three in various divisions; Carrollwood Elementary School had teams place fourth and seventh; and a Benito Middle School team placed third.

Two of Tampa Palms' teams, one that finished first and another that placed second, will compete in the state competition set for April 28 in Orlando.

Last year was the first time a Tampa Palms team advanced to the world finals, after winning at the state level.
