Citrus sheriff asks for help with dead newborn inquiry

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is asking for help from anyone with information about a female newborn found dead Feb. 6 in an irrigation ditch in Vero Beach.

Investigators believe that the person responsible for the crime came from another part of the state, threw the baby in the ditch and fled.

Investigators believe the baby was carried full term and the mother completed her pregnancy. They are searching for anyone who fits this scenario _ pregnant for nine months and now suddenly without an infant.

An autopsy conducted on the baby revealed a 1-week-old female, probably white but possibly Hispanic. She weighed 6{ to 7 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers anonymously at (800) 273-TIPS or to speak with a detective at (561) 978-6124.
