Soroptimists honor women at luncheon

Eight women were honored recently at a luncheon at Carlouel Yacht Club for their contributions to the community by Soroptimist International of Upper Pinellas.

Michelle Durban was awarded an $800 scholarship called the Women's Opportunity Award, which is designed to help women who are heads of households continue their education.

Sarah Nickerson was presented the Violet Richardson Award, which honors young women 14 to 18 years old who make the community a better place through volunteer efforts.

The six other honorees and their field of expertise were Whitney Gray (community service), Sandra Diamond (law), Elaine Forestier (art), Lu Banks (government), Terry Sue Turner (health care) and Nancy Hodges (business).


receives state charter

At a recent meeting at the VFW Post home in Clearwater, Son of AMVETS Squadron 2473 received its charter from the AMVETS Department of Florida and installed its first slate of officers.

With more than 70 attending, the new charter was read and presented to Bill Kallberg, who was installed as the squadron's first commander. Bill Benson, AMVETS state public relations officer, installed Kallberg and the following officers: John Greer, first vice commander; Dan O'Dell, second vice commander; Brad Sumlin, adjutant; George Ligelis, finance officer; Mark Gane, provost marshal; Dave Johnson, chaplain; and John Barnett, historian. The dinner after the meeting was sponsored and staged by AMVETS Post 2473 and Auxiliary.

County Estate Planning Council installs officers

Pinellas County Estate Planning Council recently installed the following officers for 2001: Gary W. Davis, charitable foundation executive with All Children's Hospital Foundation, president; Stephen A. King, CPA, vice president; John Monte, chartered life underwriter of JMI Group, secretary; Matthew R. Masem Jr., trust officer and executive with Bank of America in Clearwater, treasurer; and Janet R. Rosenquist, CPA at Bollenbach and Forret CPAs, immediate past president. Clearwater Masons initiate new apprentice

Clearwater Masonic Lodge 127 recently initiated Richard M. Andrea into the entered apprentice degree. Performing the ceremony were Sam Lampson, Mel Hinkley, Frank Verderame, Mark Berenbaum, Bryant Davis, Art Barker, James Eubanks, Tom Dixon and Steiner Humerick. Guest lecturer was Fred McDaniels of Star Masonic Lodge 78, Largo. Andrea lives in Seminole and works as an accountant with Operation Par Inc.
