Celebrating together

Bands, floats, dignitaries and dancers in Greek costumes filled the streets Sunday in Tarpon Springs for Greek Independence Day events that included a flag-raising ceremony outside St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral and a parade. The parade featured Gregory Niotis, Greece's deputy minister for foreign affairs, and Michail Mouroustos, who won a gold medal for Greece at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It also included military and high school bands, Greek and local politicians and a 47-member music and dance group from Greece, the Philharmonic Orchestra and Tsoliades.
