A father accidentally ran over his 2-year-old daughter Sunday afternoon when she wandered behind his car as he was backing up.
The accident broke the little girl's leg and put her in serious condition at Tampa General Hospital on Sunday night, but she is expected to make a full recovery.
Tampa police said Kareem Neverson, 23, and his wife, Antoinette Dunston Neverson, 24, had walked into the parking lot of Dolphin Point apartments on S West Shore Boulevard with their daughter, Kaleesia, with the intention of getting into Mrs. Neverson's car. But in order to put the car seat in his wife's car, Neverson first had to move his 2000 Toyota Camry out of the way.
Neverson put his car in gear and began to back up slowly, police said. Neither he nor his wife realized that Kaleesia was behind the car. As his back wheel ran over Kaleesia, Mrs. Neverson saw what was happening and began to scream. Her screams startled Neverson, who then put the car in drive and pulled forward, running over Kaleesia again.
Kaleesia was rushed to TGH, where she would spend the night Sunday. Officials there could not give details about her injuries but said that she would be okay.
Neither of the Neversons will face charges in the incident, police said.
