USF assistant named Saint Leo coach

South Florida assistant Mike Madagan is returning to Saint Leo, where he was named coach Monday by athletic director Fran Reidy.

Madagan was an assistant coach at Saint Leo in 1989. He arrived at USF in 1996. Madagan signed a one-year contract and the school would not disclose his salary. He replaces Mike Hanks.

"I just think it's refreshing, the attitude that's here at Saint Leo," Madagan said. "The Saint Leo I began working at 12 years ago is merely a shadow of the university it is today."

"He was more organized than crime, he had a great rapport with the players and he was an excellent teacher," USF coach Seth Greenberg said. "He was magnificent in every aspect of his job."

FAMU lets coaches go

TALLAHASSEE _ Florida A&M did not renew the contracts of men's coach Mickey Clayton and women's coach Claudette Farmer.

Clayton (48-104, five seasons) had his best season in 1998-99 when the 12-18 Rattlers won the MEAC tournament to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. This season FAMU was 6-22.

Farmer, who replaced Clayton as women's coach in 1990-1991, was 190-124 in 11 seasons, including three regular-season and two tournament titles in the MEAC. The team was 14-13 this season.

CLEMSON: Dustin Braddick, Pasha Bains and Chucky Gilmore left the program, coach Larry Shyatt said.

INDIANA: The committee considering interim coach Mike Davis' future met for more than two hours without making a decision. The seven-member committee, appointed Friday by IU president Myles Brand, gathered in Brand's office for its first meeting.

TEXAS SOUTHERN: Coach Robert Moreland, who led the Tigers to the 1977 NAIA title and a school-record 399 victories, was fired.
