Woman's body pulled out of river downtown

Police are trying to identify the body of a woman found floating in the Hillsborough River downtown Monday.

About 3 p.m., guests at the Radisson Hotel and the Tampa Museum of Art called police to say they saw what looked like a body floating rapidly down the river. As college rowers in Tampa on spring break looked on from their boats, police fished the woman's body out of the river.

Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said the woman had no identification and appeared to have died recently. She was black, in her 50s or 60s, and wore a black jogging suit with orange stripes on the sleeves and white tennis shoes. Durkin said the body had no visible signs of trauma. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Anyone with information about the victim's identity should call Tampa police at (813) 231-6135.
