Kevin Bannon was fired after failing to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament in four years. Following the advice of their attorneys, Rutgers officials refused to comment, sports information director John Wooding said. Bannon was 59-60, including 11-16 this season. Jay Wright, who has led Hofstra to two tournament appearances, has been mentioned as a successor.

WISCONSIN: Utah's Rick Majerus, 53, taking a year sabbatical to care for his sick mother in Milwaukee, will talk to athletic director Pat Richter about the opening created when Brad Soderberg was let go Monday.

TEXAS TECH: About 85 of 900 Texas Tech professors have signed a petition against hiring former Indiana coach Bob Knight, but they don't expect the protest to mean much. Knight, who could be hired as soon as Friday, will be the subject of a faculty meeting today.
