JOHN CAPEL TIMELINE

MAY 1997: As senior at Hernando, wins state track titles in 100 and 200 meters.

FEBRUARY 1998: Signs national letter of intent to play football at University of Florida.

JUNE 1999: Captures the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships 200-meter title.

JULY 2000: Wins the 200 meters in the U.S. Olympic trials.

AUGUST 2000: Large crowd surrounds county courthouse for Capel send-off. Area supporters raise more than $23,000 to send his parents to Olympics in Australia.

SEPTEMBER 2000: Finishes eighth in the Olympic 200-meter final after a bad start.

JANUARY 2001: Surprisingly declares himself eligible for early entry to NFL draft.

FEBRUARY 2001: Tests positive for marijuana at NFL combine workouts.

APRIL 2001: Selected in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears.

MAY 2001: Arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana in Gainesville after a traffic stop.

JUNE 2001: Deferred prosecution agreement allows Capel to have a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana cleared from his record in six months.

JULY 13, 2001: Bears relinquish his rights after Capel misses several mandatory meetings.
