A jail inmate tried to kill himself by cutting his throat just before 3 p.m. Sunday, officials said. George Ronald Langer, 37, has been at the Orient Road jail since November awaiting trial on several felony charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, petty theft and dealing in stolen property. Langer was being held in his own cell in a special section of the jail in which inmates are checked on once an hour. Usually, those cells are reserved for suicidal inmates. Still, officials said several minutes passed before Langer was found by the deputy on patrol. Officials would not reveal what object Langer used to cut his throat. Most inmates under special supervision are not allowed any kind of sharp object. Langer received first aid and was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.
