Shredded tire blamed for fatal crash on I-75

An 18-year-old Lake Wales man was killed Sunday when his pickup truck and trailer hit an Interstate 75 overpass near the Pasco County line, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials.

Adam Granados was northbound in a 1999 Ford pickup truck when the tread on the truck's left front tire shredded and came off, officials said.

Granados lost control of the truck, which was pulling an empty 27-foot trailer, veered into the grassy median and crashed into the concrete pillar of the School Bus Road overpass shortly after 11 a.m. He was wearing his seatbelt.

The trailer was empty, officials said, because Granados was on his way to Georgia to buy a load of watermelons to bring back and sell.

Since the collision, engineers have checked the overpass and ruled that it is still structurally sound, officials said.

Granados' wife and family could not be reached for comment Sunday.
