A Broward County instructor who teaches at an alternative high school and once was an at-risk student himself won the Florida Teacher of the Year award Tuesday night.
During a ceremony hosted by actor Edward James Olmos, Henry Brown wiped away tears as he received a crystal trophy and a $10,000 check from Burdines department stores, the award's sponsor. His school, Hallandale Adult Community Center Alternative High School, received $1,000.
"For my students, thank you for making my days exciting and challenging," Brown said. "Public education is working in the state of Florida."
Brown was chosen from 130,000 public school teachers.
The other finalists were Sharon Burnette of Crown Point Elementary School in Jacksonville; Carol Leonard of Lemon Bay High School in Englewood; Glenn Rustay of Garden City Elementary School in Fort Pierce; and Angela Williams of Riversprings Middle School in Crawfordville.
