THE MIKE HAMPTON REPORT

LAST OUTING: In Colorado's 10-2 loss to lowly Texas last Friday, Hampton was rocked for 10 hits and 6 earned runs in 4 innings _ the second time in five starts the pitcher hasn't gotten past the fourth. He gave up three homers, only the second time in 206 big-league starts Hampton has allowed more than two home runs in a game.

NEXT SCHEDULED APPEARANCE: Today vs. San Francisco.

THE SKINNY: It wasn't that long ago that Hampton was being mentioned as a Cy Young Award contender. Lately, however, he has been anything but spectacular. Hampton's most recent outing was his worst of the season, and he hasn't pitched well in more than a month. In his last five starts, he is 0-4 and has allowed 27 earned runs in 28 innings. During this stretch, his ERA has risen from 3.60 to 4.32. In fairness to Hampton, most of his Rockies teammates are struggling, too.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "Hampy is trying to throw a shutout and not give up anything," Colorado manager Buddy Bell told the Rocky Mountain News. "It's pretty much that way with all the players right now, trying to do a little too much. They are playing with too much tension."
