Six-string magic

This G-3 gig features Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci, some of the hottest six-stringers ever to finger a fret.

Rock wizard Satriani makes jaws drop not just for his skill, but for his sheer creativity and sense of melody. He taps and pokes and wails on that whammy bar. And it all sounds pretty, not obnoxious.

Satriani taught Mr. Vai, another dazzler who had stints in both Frank Zappa's and David Lee Roth's bands.

I don't know Petrucci's stuff, but you figure he must not stink or he's a fool to tour with these two.

The G-3 boys perform 8 p.m. Friday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $35.50-$75. (727) 791-7400.
