Committee works on school boundaries

Members of a boundary committee for two new schools in New Tampa are making headway toward having a proposal ready to present to the public by October. The 21-member committee met for the second time Monday and received more information for drawing attendance zones around a middle school and high school that will open there in 2003.

Middle school "JJ" and high school "JJJ" will be just west of the intersection of Interstate 75 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. The committee of parents and educators is trying to draw boundaries that will offer overcrowding relief to Gaither and Wharton high schools and Buchanan Middle School.

Bill Person, the school district's director of pupil administrative services, has been assisting the committee, as well as four others considering boundaries for other schools that will open in 2003. He said the New Tampa committee members have their work cut out for them.

"Out of all the boundaries we're doing, these two are the most complex," Person said. "I've lost a lot of sleep over these two."

Person said he hopes to have community-approved boundary proposals ready to present to the School Board in November.
