County sues to collect $260,000 in back taxes

The county tax collector is suing more than 300 businesses and individuals that officials say are late in paying about $260,000 in taxes.

Among the list are bigwig companies such as Bank of America and Burger King, as well as locals such as the Brooksville Donut Stop, the lawsuit states.

The taxes, due on April 1, are for tangible personal property _ including items such as business furniture and fixtures. Some of those that owe the most include: Grubbs Construction, which the county says is behind on more than $64,000, and General Electric Capital Corp., which owes more than $10,000.

Tax collector Juanita Sikes said the lawsuit will enable the county to get a warrant used for collection.
