Futuristic kicks on old Route 66

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology solar car rolls along a portion of historic Route 66 east of Amarillo, Texas, on Thursday as part of the 2001 American Solar Challenge. University teams, companies and clubs built and entered more than 25 solar-powered cars in this year's race, which began Sunday in Chicago and travels 2,300 miles to end Wednesday in Claremont, Calif. The cars have cramped, non-air-conditioned cockpits and convert sunlight to electricity, which is stored in batteries. For race updates, see www.formulasun.org/asc.
