Work trench near school collapses, hurting man

(ran PC edition)

A man installing sewer lines at Pasco Middle School was partially buried Wednesday when the side wall of a trench collapsed on him.

Dade City Fire Department Capt. Joey Wubbena said the 37-year-old Seffner man was installing the lines with two co-workers from Jay Massard Plumbing Co. in Tampa.

He was working in a trench that was about 6{ to 7 feet deep when the side wall of the trench collapsed on him. It buried the man down to about the middle of his thighs, Wubbena said.

The man, who was not identified, began digging himself out of the hole with a shovel. By the time paramedics arrived, he was buried only about 10 inches, Wubbena said.

He was conscious the whole time.

Rescue crews took the man to East Pasco Medical Center for a possible fractured right ankle.

Officials also notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which will follow up with an investigation at the school this morning.
