Hepburn doing well

Katharine Hepburn was responding well to antibiotics for a urinary tract infection and should be released this weekend, a hospital official said Friday.

The 94-year-old actor was admitted to a Hartford, Conn., hospital Wednesday and had two days of tests. Her past health problems include arthritis, pneumonia and Parkinson's-like tremors.

Rather riled up

Dan Rather ripped his CBS bosses, saying they forced him to do a story on missing Washington intern Chandra Levy.

"What happened was, they got the willies, they got the buckwheats, their knees wobbled and we gave it up," Rather said on Don Imus' New York-based radio show.

Until Wednesday, CBS was the only major news organization that had not done a story on Levy, missing since April 30. Friday, Rather said that Levy is only a missing persons case and that the media is in a feeding frenzy because of her reported involvement with U.S. Rep. Gary Condit.

Anchor charge dropped

The Leon County State Attorney's Office dropped a battery charge against a Fox News anchor accused of hitting another reporter with his car, after the sides agreed to a financial settlement last month.

Shepard Smith was arrested Nov. 17 after freelance reporter Maureen Walsh said Smith hit her with his rented Mazda Millenia as she stood in an empty parking space while they were covering the presidential election aftermath.

Madonna not retiring

"Absolutely not true" was the response of Madonna spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg to a story in Britain's Daily Express that the singer/actor will quit show business after her current tour to spend more time with her family.

"I'm not going to deny she may have said something like that to someone," Rosenberg told the New York Daily News. "But you're going to have her to kick around for a long time."

Madonna, 42, is married to director Guy Ritchie, 32. They have a son, Rocco, 11 months. She has a daughter, 4-year-old Lourdes, from a previous relationship.

Cruising

Glamourmagazine.co.uk says that Tom Cruise didn't invite new girlfriend Penelope Cruz on his Fiji Island holiday and that their relationship is not as hot and heavy as some reports indicate. Cruise is holidaying with 10 people, the Web site says, including one of his sisters.

Correction

The late jazz artist Tito Puente was born in New York and was of Puerto Rican descent. An Associated Press article on Wednesday's 2B mentioned another nationality.
