PC shoppers buying less, study says

Shoppers look at Compaq desktop computers Friday in a Skokie, Ill., store. The nation's ailing personal computer industry has led to the first decline in worldwide PC sales since 1986, according to market research firm Gartner Dataquest. Preliminary results from the second quarter indicated that worldwide shipments of personal computers totaled 30.4-million units, a decline of 1.9 percent from the second quarter of 2000. The United States accounts for nearly 40 percent of the world's PC market.
