WHAT: Short-track racing in the Open Wheel Modified, Figure 8, Outlaw Late Model, Mini Stock, Street Stock and Hornet classes.
WHEN: Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands at 5. Racing starts at 7.
WHERE: Sunshine Speedway, 4550 Ulmerton Road (State Road 688).
ADMISSION: Adults, $10; children 6-12, $4; children under 6, free; pits, $18; parking, free.
NOTES: The School Bus Figure 8 race last week may have set an attendance record, but the crowd could have been larger if the track had more seats and hundreds of fans had not been turned away. For those who didn't get a chance to get in and would like to see what short-track racing is all about, tonight would be a good primer. It's the standard fare, and at the standard prices. Another chance to see the school buses won't come until Nov. 3. The closest thing to the bus races that the speedway runs on a regular basis is the Street Stock Figure 8s, which actually go faster and are more dangerous. Halfway through the season, points battles are shaping up and the competition is intensifying, which makes for a better show. Hornets, a special class for drivers 16-19, are on the schedule. Enduros will return next weekend.
