Suit pairs elegance and versatility

Question: I've been invited to a huge charity event this summer, and I'm at a loss about what to wear. I would like a two-piece outfit with an open neckline because I have beautiful accessories. Please help.

Answer: I have selected Vogue 1173, sizes 6 to 22. The pattern has many options, including three skirt lengths in slim or flared style, three sleeve lengths and two neckline variations.

Many fabric selections are available. If it is a daytime event, it will likely be less formal. You might select linen, a silky Shantung, satin-back crepe or pique.

This elegant design should work beautifully for many occasions, from weddings to garden parties. It features my favorite design line, a seam from the shoulder, over the bust and ending atthe hem.

The winner this week

Each week a reader wins a prize for sending in a helpful sewing hint. This week's winner is Barbara Killius of St. Louis. Her tip:

"When letting down an old hem, you can virtually erase the old crease line by machine top-stitching on this line, and then proceed with your new hem!"

You, too, could win a pressure-sensitive tape measure that will not tear, shrink or stretch and has inches and centimeters clearly marked.
