Sweden has honored an author who helped galvanize that nation to end the lowly status of its farm tenants a half-century ago.
Two nondenominated commemoratives, both of them 5 kronor and for use on domestic mail, recall the birth centennial of Ivar Lo-Johansson. One stamp depicts the author with a view of his home in Stockholm, while the other shows a truck with the last load of furniture from a tenant's home, signaling the end of Sweden's tenant system.
Lo-Johansson (1901-1990) was born to farm tenants in Osmo, south of Stockholm, but he never took a liking to manual farm labor. His favorite activity was reading, and he took up writing after trying several other occupations.
His 1927 travel book, Vagabond Life in France, described jobs he took to support himself on the road, but it was his novel Goodnight, Earth in 1933 that shook Swedes by delineating the sorry living conditions of farm tenants, whom he championed in other works.
Lo-Johansson's polemics contributed to the gradual abolition of the agriculture tenant system between 1944 and '45, after which farm laborers were given their own home and a plot of land.
As Lo-Johansson grew older, his literary output increased, and his last contribution between 1978 and 1985 was four books of memoirs.
