National Guard Pfc. David Villarroel, 19, examines a trucker's ID on Friday at a checkpoint on Pendola Point Road, which leads to the Port of Tampa. The Guard was positioned at the port Friday to begin a daily, round-the-clock watch in order to protect cruise ships and the millions of gallons of chemicals and gasoline that are stored there. "We are trying to instill confidence in the public that they can come down to Florida, go to Disney, take a cruise," said Capt. Vernon Dohmann, public affairs officer for the 53rd Infantry Brigade. "We're there, and we'll continue to keep the country safe."
