Civil rights director will be part of Uhuru forum

Bobby Doctor, regional director of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, will take part in a forum Tuesday night at the Uhuru House.

Joining Doctor on the panel will be Omali Yeshitela, founder of the Uhuru movement in St. Petersburg, and Guy Burns, a Clearwater lawyer who represents 39 people who filed a lawsuit against St. Petersburg, saying they were harmed when police tear-gassed the Uhuru House five years ago.

The Civil Rights Commission held hearings in St. Petersburg five years ago after violent disturbances rocked the city in October and November 1996. Doctor delivered a commission report that cited institutional racism in St. Petersburg and encouraged businesses and religious organizations to do more to promote economic development in the black community.

The forum will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Uhuru House, 1245 18th Ave. S. For information, contact Connie Burton at (727) 821-6620.
