Land O'Lakes gets a new honorary mayor

Joyce Miguel, 43, was named Land O'Lakes' new honorary mayor at last weekend's Flapjack Festival on Saturday. The winner shows up at the area's ribbon cuttings, fundraisers and special events.

"I want to continue to be involved in the community," said Mrs. Miguel, who grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved to Land O'Lakes six years ago. She says she loves its small-town feel.

"I can't go to the grocery store without seeing three or four people I know," she said.

Mrs. Miguel, branch manager of Land O'Lakes SunTrust bank, raised about $6,300 in a contest that included three candidates. She will donate 10 percent of that amount to the Pasco Food Bank. Other candidates were Edna Dunston, owner of Sophisticated Tailoring, and Ben Pumo, who owns Benedetto's Italiano Ristorante.

Mrs. Miguel and her husband, Jerry, have three children: Chris, 16, Jerry, 14 and Nicole, 13. Mrs. Miguel takes over the honorary mayor position from Roz Brown of Lake Como Club.

Student inducted into honor society

Cameron Knight, son of Larry and Tinna of Lutz, was inducted as a charter member into the National Junior Honor Society on Nov. 1 at Most Holy Redeemer Inter-Parochial School.

Knight, an eighth-grader, will graduate in May and plans to attend either Jesuit High School or Wesley Chapel High School in the fall of 2002. Knight also has attended a camp at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton and will pursue a position on the varsity team this summer.
