OBITUARIES

RABBI CHAIM STERN, 71, one of Reform Judaism's most prolific liturgists, died Nov. 5 in Miami. He was the editor and author of the majority of the prayer books used by the 800 congregations in the American Reform movement, Judaism's liberal wing. His influence extended even to President Bill Clinton, who quoted a passage on contrition from one of Rabbi Stern's books during the president's sex scandal.
