Volleyball

Amanda McGowan and Ashley Martin of St. Petersburg recently finished second in the 14-and-under division of the USA Junior Olympic Beach Volleyball Championships on Clearwater Beach. McGowan, a 5-foot-9 setter/hitter and Martin, a 6-foot middle hitter, play for Seminole High.

Football

Linebacker Mike Ross and quarterback Chris Davis have been nominated to play in the second annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 5.

The game is scheduled to be televised on ESPN2. About 400 players are nominated, with the list later whittled to 35 to 40 players.

Honors

Diane Weaver of Indian Rocks Christian is one of 20 state finalists in the Wendy's High School Heisman program. All finalists must maintain at least a B average and be active in the community. Students are nominated by their principals. In December, 12 finalists will travel to New York where one girl and one boy will be named winners.

Ex-Gibbs star Boof Bonser has been named Minor League Player of the Year by the Florida Diamond Club. Bonser went 16-4 with a 2.49 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 134 innings for Hagerstown in the San Francisco Giants organization. Bonser, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, also was named to the first team of the Baseball America minor-league all-star team.
