Manatee sanctuaries start today

In a steady drizzle, U.S. Fish and and Wildlife Service volunteer Katherine Cullen rolls a manatee sanctuary buoy to the dock's edge at the agency's office in Crystal River, while USFW Officer Jerry Shields waits to load them aboard a boat. The buoys will mark the sanctuary areas in Kings Bay starting today and will remain until March 31. During that period, people and boats are not allowed to enter any of the bay's seven sanctuaries, designed to protect endangered species.
