Hospice presents volunteer awards

Hospice of the Florida Suncoast recently honored four volunteers at its annual appreciation luncheon at the Harborview Center. They were chosen from a list of nominees submitted by staff.

Charlie Neil, a volunteer for the hospice since 1994, has logged more than 6,600 volunteer hours. Known as the "go-to" person in volunteer data entry, he manages several projects and assists in sending out hospice mailings and publications.

Liz Kirkman's commitment to the hospice started after her mother's death. Working with her husband, Jim, she has participated in patient care meetings, 11th hour support and serves on the board of directors for Hospice of the Florida Suncoast.

Dorothy LeCain, a volunteer with the hospice since 1989, was named the Daily Points of Light Award recipient for March 6, 2002, for which she will receive a certificate and letter from President Bush. She helps patients and families in any way possible, including cooking, cleaning or just holding a hand and listening. In the past 12 months, she has volunteered for more than 650 hours.

More than 1,400 volunteers who helped Religious Community Services provide emergency and transitional housing for families, safe shelter for victims of domestic violence and food for the hungry were honored at the Fourth Annual Volunteer Appreciation event the first week of March.

The following awards were presented to outstanding volunteers and organizations or groups who have supported RCS throughout the year:

+ Grace House Director's Award: Dave and Doris Strathearn

+ The Haven Volunteer of the Year Award: Judy Ranney

+ The Haven Director's Award: Jacqueline Zakrzewski

+ Stepping Stone Volunteers of the Year Award: Skipped Stitches

+ Stepping Stone Director's Award: Garden Club of Largo

+ Thrift Store Volunteer of the Year Award: Susanne McNamee

+ Thrift Store Director's Award: Merle Walker.
