Justice may end Adam's Mark agreement early

The head of the Justice Department's civil rights division has notified the Adam's Mark hotel chain that he would consider an early end to an agreement that helped settle a high-profile race-discrimination case two years ago.

Assistant attorney general for civil rights, Ralph Boyd, said that if the company met the agreement's requirements over the next nine months, he would consider terminating it then. At present, the agreement, which imposes on the company costly measures on reporting, training and advertising, applies until November 2004. The agreement arose from charges that the Daytona Beach Adam's Mark discriminated against guests attending an April 1999 Black College Reunion.
