The Springstead High symphonic band earned superior ratings at the recent Florida Bandmasters Association district concert festival. In addition, Springstead senior Mary Jo Dionne earned a superior rating as student conductor. The band will be representing Hernando County at the state festival in April.

Hernando High junior Carrie Nicole Carnes was recently named to receive the University of Rochester's Humanities and Social Sciences award. The award is given annually to selected students who excel academically in the area of humanities and social studies.

Dannielle Marie Churchill, a junior at Hernando High, is the recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science award, which recognizes academic achievement in the field of science.

Eleven Westside Elementary teachers recently received certification as educators of note by Renaissance Learning, a developer of reading and math education materials. The teachers are: Barbara Wells, Diane Jorger Elchenberger, Dolores Cardenas, Helen Keith, Jane Stevenson, Julie Tidd, Shannon Pease, Stacie Alaimo, Susan Cannoy, Teddie Black and Kelly McCrady.
