ADOPT-A-PET

Chelsea is a 1-year-old female, torti domestic shorthair cat. Princess is a 5-month-old female, brown tiger and white domestic shorthair cat. Sadie is a 14-week-old female, black and white Lab cross. Toby is a 9-month-old neutered male, golden Lab cross.

In the 2000-2001 fiscal year, there were 7,158 animals impounded including 3,790 cats and 3,161 dogs at the Citrus County Animal Shelter. Of these, there were 631 owner claims, 1,363 adoptions, 5,028 euthanasias and 136 dead on arrival. There were also 207 other animals through the shelter, such as wild animal releases, livestock auctioned off, and others. Since Oct. 1, 2001, there have been 594 adoptions and 1,672 euthanasias. There were 40 adoptions and 45 euthanasias during the week of March 14-20.

The shelter at the end of Airport Road in Inverness has a large number of older animals, as well as puppies and kittens, available for adoption. Shelter adoption and claim hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays. For information, call 726-7660.
