FLORIDA STATE

The defense dominated during the first scrimmage of spring. Starting quarterback Chris Rix struggled, going 2-of-8 for six yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

The defense played aggressively, sending blitzes to disrupt the quarterbacks.

Defensive end Alonzo Jackson sustained a minor injury to his right shoulder. Running back Greg Jones was held out because of a minor shoulder injury.

"It was a good old-fashioned scrimmage," coach Bobby Bowden said. "I told them that's the way we used to scrimmage. It reminded me of the old days."

SOUTH FLORIDA: Coach Jim Leavitt termed the Bulls' second day in pads "an average practice."

"The defense did better than the offense," he said. "I think they were embarrassed in Thursday's practice. They really got beat Thursday."

CENTRAL FLORIDA: Coach Mike Kruczek used the fourth practice for a limited scrimmage. "Our guys need to learn to play with some intensity," he said. "We have a lot of young people, but they will come around."
