CLEARWATER _ A shortage of manpower in Clearwater may cause the Pinellas Defense Council to appeal to women to serve as air wardens, according to Capt. Hal Morrison.

Morrison told a group of wardens and others Tuesday night that defense work and the Army had taken away so many men that all air raid sectors were undermanned.

Morrison appealed to the sector leaders to seek women to volunteer for the work of air raid wardens and fire watchers. Wardens are required to take a 10-hour course in first aid and incendiary bomb work.

4 miles of walks laid in subdivision

Four miles of sidewalks have been laid in Marymount, the newest subdivision east of Clearwater, as well as two and a half miles of curb and gutter. By next Tuesday, the contractor will be placing rock upon three streets. One hundred coconut palms and 200 Washingtonian palms have been planted.

G.W. Potter, a landscape engineer from Altoona, Pa., will be in charge of all the curb, gutter and street work. He is said to be cooperating thoroughly with the developer to make Marymount one of the most beautiful subdivisions in the city.

This high class addition has perhaps the greatest altitude of any subdivision in the county _ at least 76 feet. Marymount will be a beautiful place before the summer, Potter said.

Citizens Safety League zooms off

CLEARWATER _ Despite the fact that it was organized just a few days ago, the Clearwater Citizens Safety League is already working at top speed in its campaign to reduce the number of automobile accidents here.

It was announced yesterday that the league, headed by Ross B. Norton, has endorsed continuation of a free auto inspection service. They are also strongly urging that the inspection be made mandatory.

The inspection program was started several months ago by the Clearwater Safety Council. Approximately 300 vehicles have been examined for brakes, lights and horn defects since that time.

Ms. Grace Bailey, league secretary, is now ready to mail out letters cautioning reckless drivers and pedestrians and urging their cooperation in the future. The names or car license numbers of the violators will be jotted down by members of Norton's committee of "S-men," a secret committee known only to him.

Barracuda found at Indian Rocks

CLEARWATER _ A barracuda weighing over 100 pounds and about 6 feet long was speared off the Indian Rocks drawbridge Friday afternoon.

Florida appears to be the southern limit of the range of this species, which is the common barracuda off the middle Atlantic coast.

This is only the second fish of this species to be caught in these waters, as far as history goes.
