Pickup hits alligator;
driver is killed
COCOA _ A 23-year-old driver died Saturday after his pickup hit an alligator on a highway and flipped over several times.
Adam Lee Crawford of Port St. John was pronounced dead at the scene after his 1998 Ford pickup struck the alligator, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Speed and poor lighting were factors in the early morning accident 5 miles west of Cocoa, officials said. Cocoa is 42 miles east of Orlando.
Carly Robb, who traps alligators, said the warm weather has drawn the animals out for mating season. Robb said she and her father have removed four alligator carcasses from roads in Brevard County in the past three days.
"It's getting to be breeding season, and males are doing stupid things," Robb told Florida Today. "They're out looking for their girlfriends."
3 New Jersey residents
made ill by Florida fish
TITUSVILLE _ Three people in New Jersey have suffered neurotoxin poisoning from puffer fish caught in Florida, state health officials said Sunday.
Terence McElroy, spokesman for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, said people should not eat puffer fish caught in the Titusville area until the state tests the fish supply.
Neurotoxin poisoning causes tingling and burning of the lips and tongue and numbness of the face, McElroy said. Symptoms can also include slurred speech and, in severe cases, paralysis.
Neurotoxin poisoning comes from a toxin that is characteristic to some puffer fish, also known as blow fish, he said. Puffer fish are not commonly eaten.
State officials are beginning to test the fish and McElroy said he expects to know in a few days whether the supply is contaminated.
