Baby found dead at day care center

The Department of Children and Families and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a 7-week-old baby found Tuesday afternoon.

The child was not breathing when found at 101 Jeffrey Drive in Brandon. He was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Though it was unclear how the baby died, Sheriff's Office spokesman Rod Reder said it appears the death was from natural causes. An autopsy is pending, he said.

Reder said the home was apparently operating as an unlicensed day care center.

Linda Stoller, manager of the Hillsborough County child care licensing program, said her department fielded a complaint about the home in April 2001.

Upon investigation, though, she said officials determined the homeowners were not being paid to watch children, and some of the children were relatives.

"That closed our case," Stoller said. "The next time we heard about this home was (Tuesday)."

An official from DCF would not comment on the specifics of the case but confirmed the department is conducting an investigation.
