BUSH VACATION DEFENDED: The White House on Wednesday defended President Bush's plans for a nearly monthlong vacation in August, suggesting that the base of operations for presidential duties would merely move from Washington to Bush's Texas ranch. Bush plans to leave Washington for Crawford after his annual physical Aug. 6 and to return around Labor Day. Critics had questioned whether Bush should take time off in the middle of mounting economic uncertainty.
