The Giants signed quarterback Kerry Collins through the 2004 season. The two-year extension was agreed to Wednesday, less than 24 hours before the start of training camp.
Collins, who would have become a free agent after this season, will earn $15.4-million over the next three seasons. The deal creates enough salary-cap room for the Giants to re-sign his backup, Jason Garrett.
Collins will receive a $5.85-million bonus, but his salary this year will drop to $650,000. Over the next two years, he will earn a combined $8-million to $9-million.
COWBOYS: Dallas signed draft picks Tyson Walter, DeVeren Johnson and Bob Slowikowski to seven-year contracts that will be reduced to three if they reach incentive clauses based on playing time.
MCCONKEY AWARD UPHELD: A New Jersey appellate court upheld a $6.06-million judgment for former Giants tight end Phil McConkey. McConkey testified he never would have taken a position with the brokerage firm Alexander & Alexander in 1996 if it hadn't assured him the firm was not a takeover target. McConkey lost his job seven months later.
